How can a student see the School Counselor?
I teach students how they can self refer during our first counselor lesson of the year. This process is for first through fourth graders. I teach Kindergartners to talk with their teacher and the teacher will contact me. If students are having an adult size problem, which is a problem that is either too big for the kids to solve on their own OR they have tried solving on their own, and need an adult's help, they will ask their teacher for permission to come talk to me. The teacher then lets the student know when an appropriate time is to fill out the "Need to Talk Request" form. The student knows to fill it out completely, fold it, and place it in the hanger. As soon as I am available, I will look at the requests and work with the teacher to find the best time to meet with the student about the concern.
There are times during the school year when a student may benefit from visiting the school counselor. This may include a variety of topics such as: friendship problems, conflict resolution, school anxiety, and coping skills. I am here to help your student have a successful day and learn. I will make an effort to contact the parent/guardian if it seems as though I am continuously seeing a student for the same reason multiple times.
Parents are always invited to contact me by phone or email with any concerns, input, and/or requests for assistance regarding their student.
